Aggressive vs. Conservative: Defining Your Investment Strategy

Should I be more aggressive or more conservative?

When it comes to investing, many people focus on this question, but before you decide how to invest, it’s worth taking a step back and asking a different question:

Why am I investing in the first place?

Your investment strategy shouldn’t be determined by market headlines, trends, or what someone else is doing. It should be guided by what you’re trying to accomplish.

After all, money is a tool. Investing is simply a way to help that tool support the life you want to build.

For example, if you’re investing for a long-term goal like retirement, you likely have years—or even decades—before you’ll need that money. A longer time horizon often allows you to take on more risk because you have time to ride out market ups and downs.

On the other hand, if you’re saving for a goal that’s only a few years away—like buying a home—you may want a more conservative approach. You probably don’t want your ability to make a down payment to depend on what the market happens to do right before you’re ready to buy.

The next time you’re evaluating your investments, start by asking yourself:

  • What am I investing for?
  • When will I need this money?
  • What am I hoping this money helps me accomplish?

The answers can provide valuable direction and help you build an investment strategy that aligns with your goals, timeline, and comfort level.

The right investment strategy starts with understanding what you’re trying to accomplish. Helping clients identify those goals and align their finances accordingly is at the core of what we do.
